Fantasy Baseball Camp: Training Like a Yankee, Part 6

We had one more game left after lunch and that concluded the schedule. We played the Jeff Nelson-Tanyon Sturtze team. Both former Yankee pitchers and really good guys. They too have had a rough camp and the Nelson-Sturtze team entered the finale with the identical2-5 record we sported.

It was billed as the “Battle For The Basement” or as one of our guys put it in his pre-game plea to us “Let’s show them we suck less than they do.” We rallied around that cry.

The boys must have been charged by that mantra and we got six runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 12-7 win and a final camp record of 3 wins and 5 losses. Yes, we suck less than they do and finished out of the cellar. Boy are we proud!

By the time the afternoon game ended everyone had enough for the week. Nobody walked as naturally as they did on Monday.

On the field things did go a lot better for us the last two days with three wins in four games. We gave the first four away or we could have been formidable. I’m not sure anyone saw three wins coming after Wednesday afternoon and 0-4 record.

I ended well on Friday with a 2-4 game and a run scored. BarryO kept smiling and I kept getting prouder and prouder of him. Two solid singles to left, among his three or four best strokes of camp, gave him a 2-4 day and he scored two runs. So great to see him get around the bases and enjoy it so much!
