Fantasy Baseball Camp: Training Like a Yankee, Part 4

Locations in this article:  Detroit, MI Seattle, WA

It was then time to take the field. Game one of the day was against a team coached by perhaps two of the classiest guys to ever wear pinstripes: Roy White and Chris Chambliss. We fell behind early 9-3, rallied to tie it at 9 in the 7th, and then unraveled like a cheap suit to lose 15-9.

I had a good game. Chambliss, the hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners, told me “good hands and nice pick!” That stuff feels good at any age.

It was also good day at the plate with three solid shots to right center in four at-bats. BarryO had a single in four at-bats and an RBI. Really proud of him and he is holding up incredibly well. As a bonus he now knows who Bucky Dent is.

We were hurried through a quick lunch into the afternoon games as rain was forecast. On tap was a loaded undefeated team coached by David Wells and Paul Blair. Our coach Oscar Gamble, aka the Big O, told us, “Let’s take our drubbing and go home.” Nice.

We obliged, though we had our first lead of the season with a 1-0 cushion in the second, but by the time the torrential downpour hit in the 4th inning we were behind 9-3. Mercifully, we took our drubbing and the game was called.

All in all, I felt a bit better about things on the field today and was real pleased with a very challenging defensive day. With ground balls, line drives, stuff in the dirt, there was a real smorgasbord of opportunities with the glove. I also spent an inning in the outfield, a first for me. I kept saying under my breath, “Please don’t hit it to me,” “‘Please don’t hit it to me,” and it worked as I was flawless on the outfield grass.

Four losses in four games. As many as I lost in the two previous camps combined and we are only halfway through this year’s schedule. Geesh.

Tomorrow will be interesting as for the first time there will be inter-camp activity as all the camp Yankee teams will play the Detroit Tigers camp teams in a one day tussle. For me it will be exciting as hopefully I will get to see some of the guys I sat through rain delays with last year.

It’s also family time. My wife came to camp on Tuesday night as Andi has never been to see what the hubbub is all about. She does however recognize baseball talent and after watching our two games today she said,  “You guys really suck.” Thank you, dear.
