Floating to 21 and Beyond
If you’re seeking to hit multiple destinations in one fell swoop, a cruise is ideal. Douglas Ward, author of the 2012 Berlitz Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships noted “a 21-year old could learn a lot from being aboard a ship, experiencing different countries and environments, and food during a cruise.”
Melissa Lande, a mom of adult children in the cruise business says, “For a 21-year-old, cruises are great because it’s an incredibly healthy situation where you can celebrate his/her ability to imbibe in moderation while touring wonderful places and having wonderful meals.”
Ward suggested a few cruise options. “For a temperate climate close to Europe I recommend the Canary Islands. During the winter, the average (constant) temperature is a nice 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines goes there regularly, and drink prices are cheap compared to US-based ships, although the majority of passengers will be above 50.”
For travel Closer to the USA, Ward notes that “the Caribbean or Central America is best. Carnival always touts that it has the most fun (think loud), but NCL has a better crowd, and is trendier, with better service. On the other hand, Royal Caribbean International has really large resort ships with lots to do.
Overall drink prices aboard US-based ships are quite high (particularly for Europeans), but it’s all relative. If the 21-year-old is more into culture, then it would be worth considering Princess Cruises. Or, Cunard Line for a more International mix of passengers.”
Vegas It Is!
Ultimately, for my daughter her final decision for her birthday celebration destination is Las Vegas! Since we are an LA based family, it’s a relatively painless four to five hour drive. We’re bringing along a small cadre of girlfriends, hers and mine. A birthday dinner is planned in City Center at the Aria’s Sage restaurant. There she will toast 21 with absinthe lit on fire and poured over rocks table-side served from a dim-sum style tray. After that mom and her friend will turn in early and let the twenty-something’s enjoy their first of night of adult revelry!
Should parents celebrate 21st birthdays with their children? Where should Kerri and her daughter go for the milestone birthday?
