Locations in this article:  Brooklyn, NY New York City, NY San Francisco, CA

If you’re like me, you experience a bridges from the inside of a car. But, when you think about it, when you drive over a bridge you miss out on the structure’s engineering and architectural details as well the scenic views.

To walk over the iconic Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, you take a 10-foot wide walkway accessible from the north and south side parking lots. San Francisco City Guides offers free weekly tours of the Golden Gate.

On the East Coast, the Brooklyn Bridge has a 1.3-mile pedestrian walk that will give you a picture-perfect view of the Manhattan skyline.

If you’re going overseas, there’s one of my favorites. It’sSydney Harbor Bridge. Not only do you get to cross it but you get to climb it.

If you really want a one-of-a-kind bridge walk, then you need to visit the New River Gorge Arch Bridge Walk in West Virginia. You can take a guided tour across a 24-inch-wide catwalk under the bridge. Just don’t look down. The catwalk is suspended 851 feet above the ground.
