Travel Tip: Horseback Riding Safety

When you’re traveling and a hotel or a resort offers horseback riding, there are a few things you need to know before you saddle up.

Riding isn’t something you can pick up over night. You must first set out with a knowledgeable guide who will help you control the horse and follow proper safety procedures.

Unfortunately, there are still a number of unqualified people leading riding excursions. Just because an outfitter is willing to set you up with a horse, doesn’t mean it’s a safe environment or you’re riding the right horse for you. Take the time to ask questions and vet an instructor’s background.

Next, make sure your fashion sense doesn’t conflict with your common sense. Forget the Marlboro hat and opt for a hard hat.

Beyond a helmet, you don’t need special equipment or clothing for riding. Jeans or sweatpants are fine but avoid pants that twist, wrinkle or bunch, on your legs or on your knees. If you’re heading out on a long trail ride, it might be best to opt for bright colors so that you can be easily spotted.

Take it from me, horses are easily spooked. They may buck, wheel, or make sudden movements if something catches them off guard. Be sure to ask for help if you need to.
