Travel Tip: Medical Museums

Locations in this article:  Chicago, IL New Orleans, LA Philadelphia, PA

Sure, there are some wacky museums out there… but a medical museum?

Here’s why you might want to check out one of these places.

What you may not know is that medical museums are often attached to teaching institutions, so while they may have some macabre items, they’re often more educational than you think.

Philadelphia’s Mutter Museum is part of The College of Physicians. It’s got some oddities like a skull collection and and organs from famous figures, but it’s also home to a medicinal plant garden and a modern art collection.

The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because it was once the site of America’s first licensed pharmacist. It’s a cool little space, showcasing apothecary jars and instruments that were used back in the day.

The International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago is for the serious medical geek. It has artifacts and artwork that covers everything from ancient times until today.

And if you happen to be passing by Massachusetts General Hospital, stop by the Ether Dome, a National Historic Landmark where the first public surgery using an anesthetic took place.
