Enterprise Complains About Orbitz’s Commission Rates, But Doesn’t Move Toward Direct Booking

Enterprise Rent-a-car Logo - Enterprise Leaves Orbitz But Not Online Travel ProvidersAs reported last week on PeterGreenberg.com, Enterprise Holdings pulled its rental listings from Orbitz Worldwide.

In an update on the situation, Orbitz is stating that the situation with Enterprise, which operates the Alamo Rent A Car, National Car Rental, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car brands, is very different from its ongoing disagreement with American Airlines.

According to a statement from Orbitz, “Orbitz and Enterprise Holdings were unable to find mutually agreeable terms for continued promotion of Enterprise brands on Orbitz.com and CheapTickets.com after the previous contract expired.”

The statement goes on to note that “Orbitz has replaced Enterprise Holdings with other suppliers that better serve the needs of our leisure travelers.”

In the case of American, the airline filed to drop listings after Orbitz refused to use American’s direct-booking platform, and insisted the airline continue to use Orbitz’s global distribution system for ticketing.

When PeterGreenberg.com contacted Enterprise, the company directed us to its public statement on the split from Enterprise President & CEO Pam Nicholson: “We are ending our negotiations with Orbitz following their decision to de-list National and Alamo, and insist on unacceptably high commission rates from our Enterprise brand.”

Orbitz Parts Ways With Enterprise Over Commission RatesThere is no indication that Enterprise plans to use its own direct-booking platform, a la American Airlines.

In fact, on the Enterprise blog, the rental-car giant states, “We certainly want to keep working with online travel agencies where it makes sense for our customers and our business.”

Enterprise Holdings’ three brands can still be booked through various other online travel agents such as Travelocity and Kayak, while Orbitz maintains its relationships with a number of rental car companies including Hertz, Avis and Thrifty.
