Travel Tip: Cheese-Maker For A Day

More and more destinations are trying to reconnect people with their food sources, and cheese making are no exception.

From Wisconsin to Vermont to lesser-known cheese-loving states, there are a number of hands-on activities out there.

At the Massachusetts branch of the Northeast Organic Farming Association, visitors are up to their elbows in curds and whey with hands-on workshops.

They supply the milk; you bring home the cheese.

In Walla Walla, Washington, the Monteillet Fromagerie offers a two-day intensive course.

It’s $200, and includes meals on the farm, and of course your own cheese wheel to bring home.

Of course, practically the entire state of Wisconsin has a love affair with the product, so they’ve got a whole cheese trail mapped out, from cheese shops to farmers markets to hands-on experiences.

Working dairy farms are at the epicenter of the process and these experiences tend to be very kid-friendly.

At the Vermont Billing Farm, milking sessions illustrate how the product gets from the farm to table. If you can’t get to the farm, don’t worry.

Artisan shops are appearing in cities around the world, and I guarantee they offer interactive classes how to make the cheese, pair it, and of course, enjoy it.
