Travel Tip: Hypoallergenic Hotel Rooms

Travel Tip: Hypoallergenic Hotel Rooms

Hives, wheezing and headaches are common reactions to allergens, but they should not be common reactions to your hotel stay. Here’s how you can find hotels that cater to your needs.

Several hotels have partnered with a company called PURE to create low-allergen rooms.

These rooms undergo a thorough process to remove most pollutants, and feature hypoallergenic linens, air purification systems and frequent carpet cleanings. These types of rooms, which usually cost an additional $20 a night, can be found in brands like Westin, Hilton and Park Hyatt.

There are even hotels installing hypoallergenic meeting rooms.

But you may not have to pay extra to protect yourself. If you know that you might react to feathers or certain fibers, call your hotel ahead of time to request low-allergen pillows. You may even want to invest in your own hypoallergenic pillow cover.

If dust or pollutants are an issue, ask to have the carpet and drapes vacuumed and if an air purifier can be installed in your room.

Don’t forget about allergens that other guests might introduce: Try to pick hotels that are not pet-friendly; and if you choose a smoke-free property, make sure your room isn’t located just above the outdoor spot where the smokers tend to gather.
