America’s Historic Prisons

Locations in this article:  Philadelphia, PA

OK, so visiting a prison may seem like a depressing way to spend your vacation. But in some cases, a prison tour can offer some unexpected insight in to America’s history.

Probably the most well-known prison in America is Alcatraz, the island which operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963.

Aside from the traditional tour, the facility is also offering a garden tour.

That’s right, back in the day, prisoners would tend the garden as part of their rehabilitation efforts.

And recently, the once-neglected gardens were restored to reflect those times.

In Philadelphia, the Eastern State Penitentiary dates back to 1829, making it one of America’s oldest prisons.

At the time it was a model for prison systems worldwide, and even held notorious crime figures like Al Capone.

Besides highlights like the solitary confinement cell and Death Row, the facility re-opened the abandoned medical wing, where surgeons used to “practice” on inmates.

And for a glimpse into local history, check out the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, which is home to the very first prison in Arizona Territory.

It was built in 1876 with prisoners actually constructing their own cells, and the building later became shelter during the Depression.
