New York’s Standard Hotel Attracts Exhibitionists, Voyeurs and Plenty of Attention

Locations in this article:  New York City, NY

NYC Standard HotelThe Standard Hotel in New York has been creating a buzz among visitors to the city’s new High Line Park, but not for its architecture, design or furnishings.

The hotel has come under fire recently for some of the very non-standard activities engaged in by guests in full view of passers-by, thanks to the hotel’s famous floor-to-ceiling windows.

Yes, the windows come equipped with curtains, but the Standard has apparently become something of a hangout for amateur exhibitionists who aren’t afraid to “let it all hang out” for all the world to see.

Visitors to the newly-opened High Line Park, which sits adjacent to the hotel in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, have observed guests getting out of the shower, getting it on with their significant others, “getting” themselves, and even reportedly shooting pornographic movies in their rooms.

High Line Park, which was made out of an abandoned elevated railway track, has begun to attract a fair share of lookie loos who come to watch the free peep show.

This doesn’t sit well with neighbors and local business owners, however, many of whom have complained to the hotel’s management. A New York City Council member also chastised the hotel, calling the antics “unacceptable.”

The Standard’s management said yesterday in a statement that the hotel will make a concerted effort to remind guests of the transparency of the guest room windows.

The 337-room Standard Hotel opened in late 2008 and is owned by well-known hotelier Andre Balazs. Located at 848 Washington Street, it is renowned for its stunning views across both Manhattan and the Hudson river.
