Avoid Getting Involuntarily Bumped

Now that so many domestic airlines are cutting capacity, your risk of getting bumped off your flight just increased dramatically. So here’s what you need to know.

In the first half of his year, domestic airlines bumped nearly 330,000 passengers.

The good news is that the payout for getting bumped involuntarily was raised to a maximum of $400 if the airline can get you there within two hours domestically, and four hours internationally.

The payout goes to $800 if they can’t get you there in that time.

The rule of thumb is to check in as early as possible, especially if you can do it online. Get to the airport at least two hours before takeoff.

Here’s something you may not know: passengers with heavily discounted tickets have a higher risk of being involuntarily bumped.

So if you’re headed to a meeting or an event that would be ruined if you’re late, buy a full-fare ticket.
