International Driver’s License Scams

If you’re thinking about driving a car on your next trip overseas, beware. There’s a travel scheme out there that you need to know about before you get behind the wheel.

Scammers are sending fake international drivers licenses on the Internet. There’s no such thing!

There is, however, something called an International Driving Permit. An IDP is not a license.

It’s a document that allows drivers with American license to be converted for use overseas in countries that accept it.

IDPs are accepted in more than 100 countries, and are required if you’re driving more than 300 miles into Mexico, and more than 50 miles into Canada.

Only two organizations are authorized to sell IDPs: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.

If you receive an email or any kind of letter from any organization other than these two, it’s a scam.
