Want to find a restaurant in an unfamiliar place? Who should you ask for advice?
I’ll give you a hint: It may not be the person you expect.
Don’t just ask the concierge for advice—sometimes they’re outsourced by third-party companies and aren’t necessarily objective with their recommendations.
And even the bellman may misinterpret your request for a “great” place to eat as “the most expensive” or “the most touristy.”
Instead, know your audience.
If you’re looking for a trendy restaurant, stop into an art gallery and ask an employee or customer for advice.
If you’re looking for great ethnic food, stop by an Indian-owned food store or a Korean grocer to find out what they recommend.
Even calling up a local cooking school can yield some results that you may not find from the hotel staff.
And who knows? You may strike up an interesting conversation with a local.
