Liability Waivers and You

Before you participate in recreational activities, you may be asked to sign a liability waiver. But what does it really mean when you sign on the dotted line?

Companies that organize activities from skiing to snorkeling often ask participants to sign a liability waiver.

That releases them from responsibility should something happen to you.

These waivers are often written with broad language, so you need to read the fine print before you sign.

Some are so broad that they cover any incident–even those not related to the main activity.

And chances are you can’t participate in the activities if you don’t sign.

However, if you don’t like the wording, you can try to alter it by striking through a sentence and initialing it.

If the company doesn’t allow this, and you’re not comfortable with the language of the waiver, don’t be afraid to just walk away.
