Locations in this article:  London, England Philadelphia, PA

Sure, you’ve heard of hotels with roof pools and bars…but what about roof gardens? This is one of the ways that hotels are embracing the green movement in a very real way.

The idea behind rooftop gardens aren’t just to provide pretty scenery…in fact, many of these gardens don’t have any flowers at all. They grow items that show up on your dinner plate that night.

One of the newest is the Sofitel Philadelphia, which just opened its garden of vegetables and herbs that are served in the dining room and lounge.

If you want a seriously green hotel, you don’t have to look farther than the Fairmont. The Fairmont Royal York hotel has a 4,000-square-foot garden on its 14th floor roof. And last year, their brand’s Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montreal opened its own edible roof garden.

As for the next big thing in hotel gardens…how about living walls? That’s right, these are green spaces that grow vertically up the sides of buildings.

You can find one at The Athenaeum in London and at the Doubletree by Hilton at the Tower of London, which more than 40 types of plants growing on a wall.
