Peter’s Top Five Tips for Experiencing the Caribbean Like a Local
Get off the computer
If you’re headed to the Caribbean, you’re probably not going to have the same internet service or wireless coverage you’re used to at home. If you’re in Cuba, forget about getting a cell signal. And if you’re on a cruise, you’ll probably be paying through the roof for wireless internet. Unplug and unwind.
Eat Like a Local
Want a foodie adventure? How about a Bahamas Fish Fry? In Arawak Cay, you’ll find local shacks serving up the island’s best seafood.
Visit Residential Neighborhoods
On Turks and Caicos, tourism centers are on the south side of the island. Instead of hanging with the herds in Providenciales, go to the North side where more locals live and you’ll find one of the best place to watch the sunrise.
Make your own excursion
Don’t see the islands from a tour bus. Renting a car on St Vincent lets you drive on the Leeward and Windward Highways and see both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts.
Go to local hot spots
Don’t go to Senor Frogs, Margaritaville or any other chain party spot. Instead, look for local music. And trust me it’s more than tired old Reggae covers. In Turks and Caicos, you’ll hear ripsaw music, which feature instruments like goatskin drums, handsaws and hand accordions. Find a bar with ripsaw music and you’re sure to be partying like a local.
