One Year After MH370: Has Flight Tracking Changed?

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is one of the biggest mysteries of all time—and it has left us with many unanswered questions. Since its disappearance one year ago, a combined 82 aircraft, 84 ships, and 26 countries have searched for the Boeing 777. The area searched includes nearly 1.8 million square miles of the Southern Indian Ocean, and search crews focused on over 23,000 square miles of the world’s deepest oceans.

Most accident searches are tantamount to finding a needle in the haystack. But with MH370, they haven’t been able to find the haystack. Since then, I’ve speculated on how flight tracking could—and should—change. But not much has changed. Some estimates show that 70 percent of the world is not covered by radar surveillance.
