Travel Tip: Where You Can Celebrate Black History Month

ella fitzgeraldIt’s Black History Month, and that means cities are highlighting some worthwhile tours and exhibits about the African-American experience.

Here’s what you don’t want to miss this month and beyond.

In New York City, you can participate in a self-guided tour of all five boroughs, with nine stops showcasing African-American history.

That includes the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Langston Hughes Library in Queens, which has more than 45,000 volumes on black heritage.

Savannah, Georgia has celebrations all month long, including tours of Underground Railroad stops and a civil rights museum that was once the site of sit-in protests.

The Smithsonian Institute has also has programming this month in Washington, D.C., including art exhibits and lectures.

Stay tuned for the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in the National Mall.
