There’s no shortage of creativity at Black Dog Gelato in Chicago. Owner Jessica Oloroso left her job as a pastry chef at an acclaimed Chicago restaurant in order to follow the dream of bringing her favorite dessert, gelato, to her community. Gelato, an Italian version of ice cream, is made with less milk fat and is served at a warmer temperature than standard ice cream.

Oloroso’s creations include Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Sour Cherry Rootbeer Sorbet, White Chocolate Banana Curry, Blueberry French Toast, and Rosemary Irish Cream, among many others. But the flavors don’t stop with the gelato: two of the shop’s custom sundae toppings include Candied Bacon and House-Made Caramel Corn.

Named after her black dog Kaya, Oloroso opened her first shop in the neighborhood known as Ukrainian Village in 2010, then opened a second location in Roscoe Village in 2013. As if the flavors aren’t enough to keep customers interested, the shop’s success has allowed Oloroso to provide catering and delivery, so fans of the shop can have gelato brought right to their doors.
