With some chains, you know what to expect. Hampton Inn made a name for itself as the first US hotel chain to offer free breakfast. Holiday Inn claims to have pioneered the kids-eat-free concept, but now you can find kids-eat-free promotions at hotels like Hyatt and Marriott.
You might be surprised how easy it is to negotiate a free breakfast or meal. Ask a hotel manager if he is willing to throw in those extras to have the most competitive rate.
Another option is to skip the traditional hotel room and opt for an extended-stay suite. A number of extended-stay hotels such as Residence Inn, Homewood Suites, and Staybridge include free breakfast.
You can also make meals in the suite’s kitchenette for a lot more savings. Don’t forget one important factor—there has to be a grocery or convenience store nearby, and never overlook the “to-go” box. Staybridge Suites offers fully equipped kitchens, a breakfast buffet, and “On The Go” bags available as early as 5:30 a.m. weekdays.
