Travel Tips

Pregnancy and Flying

If you’re a pregnant woman who loves to travel, it doesn’t mean you have to stay at home for all nine months.

However, there are some extra precautions you need to take if you want to fly.

The safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester, when there is the least danger of complications and an expectant mother usually feels her best.

If you’re in the third trimester, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends staying within 300 miles of home to ensure access to medical care.

In general, pregnant women are advised not to travel alone and to take extra safety precautions while in foreign countries (like not drinking unpurified water).

Always wear a seatbelt and avoid deep water activities such as scuba diving because of possible risk to the fetus.

It is widely considered safe to use commercial air travel until the 36th week, but pregnant women should always check with their doctor before traveling.
