The Essentials

Is Premium Economy Worth It?

They say size matters and that’s always been true about space on airplanes, especially when it comes to legroom. And it’s a game of inches. It’s now common on most U.S. airlines to offer a premium economy seat — if you’re willing to pay for the upgrade.

But is the extra cost between $20 and $200 worth it?

On short-haul flights, journeys of under three hours, the answer is no.

JetBlue offers the most space at about 38 inches of extra legroom.

Delta’s Comfort Plus is about 35 inches.

But there’s another caution. Since most airlines define their premium economy seats as closer to the front of the cabin, that also includes the dreaded middle seat — also with a premium charge.

Given the choice of a middle seat with extra legroom or a standard coach window seat, I’ll take the window every time.
