Real ID Delayed Yet Again…Until 2023

Department of Homeland Security

Chances are you might have heard of Real ID. And chances are also good you don’t know what it is. Real ID is the product of legislation passed in 2015 requiring Americans to carry a real ID that would allow access to board domestic airline flights and enter federal buildings.

What does it look like? You go to your local State Department of Motor Vehicles and register, and then give your Driver’s License.

When you get it back, look for a gold star in the upper right corner. But so few states have been in compliance, the deadline continued to be postponed for years.

And this year, thanks to COVID-19, the federal government just pushed back the deadline again, from this October until May of 2023.

But don’t worry, if you already carry a valid passport, you won’t even need the Real ID.
