Airlines Shrinking Routes in 2020

It looks like a number of major airlines can’t shrink fast enough.

A few months ago, American Airlines announced it was going to drop 30 cities from its route network — cities like New Haven, Connecticut, Roswell, New Mexico, Moline and Springfield, Illinois were just a few cities put on the chopping block.

Then, Delta followed with suspension of service to 16 separate U.S. cities, and the axe is expected to fall soon on parts of the United route network.

So what does this mean to you? For many of you, it means a much longer drive in your car to actually begin your journey from another airport. And for others, it almost certainly means higher airfares.

One ray of light is that some airlines, like Frontier, Spirit, Allegiant and Southwest see this as an opportunity and are starting or increasing service to some of these airports in 2021.
