What You Should Know About Hurricane Categories

It’s hurricane season and when it comes to travel, forewarned is forearmed, especially if you know the terminology and how hurricane strength is measured.

A Category 1 storm has winds between 74 and 95 miles an hour.

By the time you get to Category 2 strength, that’s where some real damage can occur –(add space)winds up to 110 miles per hour.

At Category 3, with winds up to 129 miles per hour, that’s when mobile homes get destroyed and frame houses lose roofs.

By this time, a storm has been officially named, airline flights have been cancelled and airlines issue travel waivers. The time to reconsider travel is between Category 1 and 2.

After that, if you don’t cancel, the trip will be canceled for you.
