Travel Insurance Claims: What You Should Know

This year, more than one in four flights will be delayed, and as a result, travel insurance claims for delays are at an all-time high.

But travel insurance policy language can often be confusing when it comes to filing a claim, and it might be confusing as to what qualifies as a claim for a delay that will be honored.

First, you need to get a confirmation — in writing — from your airline that you were actually delayed and why.

Most insurance policies require that you be delayed for a minimum of three hours in order to be reimbursed.

But if you were delayed because you missed your flight or you were held up at a security checkpoint, you’re out of luck.

Keep your receipts for meals, hotels and transportation that you had to pay for because of the delay, but don’t forget that insurance policies have limits on daily coverage and a cap on the total amount that’s payable for any delay.
