The Essentials

Big Mac Prices Around the World

Are you trying to budget your next trip overseas? Look no further than fast food.

Each year, The Economist magazine publishes its Big Mac Index, which uses the burger to indicate the most expensive cities in the world.

In America, the Big Mac averages $5.58.

But in Russia, the same burger will run you just $1.65.

You’ll pay much more in Switzerland — $6.62.

The best bargains for the Big Mac is in Argentina, where the dollar buys 35% more pesos than it did just a few months ago.

And in Turkey, the U.S. dollar buys 14% more Turkish liras during the same period.

No one is suggesting you actually have to buy or eat the burger, but The Economist’s Big Mac Index — which has been done since 1986 — has proven to be a great indicator of how much your business or leisure trip is really going to cost you. Fries are, of course, extra.
