The Essentials
Airline Algorithms and Connecting Flight Troubles
For many travelers, it continues to be a challenge to race from one flight to another in the US to make their connecting flight.
One US airline has implemented a computer program that’s supposed to help — but often doesn’t.
American Airlines now has an algorithm that measures the time and physical distance between connecting flights.
If the system determines you can’t make that connection, it automatically bumps you from that flight and gives the seat to another passenger.
But many passengers have been able to sprint to their flights, only to discover they no longer have seats. On the other hand, United Airlines has something called Connection Saver.
If the system determines your incoming flight is late and you won’t make the connecting flight, it analyzes that connecting flight. If that flight isn’t connecting with any other flights, United will hold the plane. This is saving about 2,000 passengers each day, and this past summer saved nearly 225,000 connections.
