Deny it or not, the average airline traveler is getting heavier, and wider, and as many airlines are crowding more seats into cabins, it has literally become crunch time for plus-sized passengers.
For example: on many flights, the width of your seat can be as narrow as 16 and a half inches — at best.
But what happens if you just don’t fit? If the cabin crew determines your size will impair a safe passenger evacuation in the event of an emergency, you could find yourself thrown off the plane.
Recently, a few airlines are giving proactive plus-size travelers a way to save a buck while gaining that much-needed extra space, and not compromising safety.
Southwest Airlines and Alaskan Airlines currently offer the opportunity to reserve two side-by-side seats, and then a possibility of a full refund for the second seat after the flight.
