The Essentials
Airports Are Turning Down the Volume
What’s one of the more annoying parts of your airport experience — gratuitous noise — ranging from canned music from airport concessionaires, to overlapping airline gate boarding announcements, to security PA’s, to welcome recorded messages from local mayors.
But now a number of airports are trying to be more quiet.
San Francisco worked with airlines and store owners to centralize and reduce announcements, and have reduced 40% of the public pages. Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has also cut announcements to only essential information, as has Singapore’s Changi Airport and at the Zurich Airport as well.
And Houston’s Hobby Airport has replaced the loud terminal music with more soothing and calming tunes.
Now, if they can only limit announcements to celebrate on-time performance.
