Real ID: What Travelers Need to Know About the New Deadline

The idea of Real ID has been around since shortly after the tragedy of 9/11. It provides enhanced identity verification for travelers, but the rule has continued to be delayed. Most recently, full enforcement has been pushed back until 2027.

In theory, travelers over 18 years of age will need an updated ID — such as a driver’s license or state-issued identification card — with Real ID features to pass through airport security checkpoints.

While the new deadline is now May 7, 2025, the TSA is giving local authorities two more years to implement the requirements.

Bottom line: If history is any indication, there’s every reason to believe the program might be delayed again.

But don’t worry — if you already have a valid U.S. passport, you already have Real ID.
