Venice’s Entrance Fee: Managing Overtourism

Last summer, Venice imposed a five-euro entrance fee on visitors without hotel reservations to manage overtourism.

The city generated nearly $3 million in fees, but tourist numbers didn’t drop. So what is Venice doing this year?

The city will nearly double the number of “peak tourism” days that require this entrance fee. If you don’t pay at least four days in advance, the fee increases to ten euros. Will this effectively reduce visitor numbers? Probably not.

The summer of 2024 suggested that while the fee raised municipal revenue, it did not deter tourists from flocking to the city.
