The Essentials

Hurricane Insurance for Travelers

Hurricane Beryl was a terrifying and destructive start to hurricane season this year and meteorologists are predicting a higher than average number of severe storms for 2024.

So should you — or can you — buy insurance to protect you?

The answer is a qualified yes. First, you need to buy that insurance before a hurricane is officially named — like fire insurance, you can’t buy a policy for your house once the second floor is in flames.

But what happens if a hurricane strikes and you have a bonafide policy?

If you haven’t left for your trip, you’ll get a full refund. But what if you’re already there? While you’ll get the medical and property coverage in your plan, some policies state that you’d need to miss at least 50% of the length of the trip for coverage to kick in. So read the fine print.
