If I’ve learned anything about searching for the best airfares on the internet, it’s that the lowest fare is not always your friend.
In fact, the lowest fare is usually the first fare quoted, and therein lies a trap.
In many cases, that first fare is somewhat misleading because it’s a basic economy fare, which gives you few rights. And that includes refunds, seat selection, baggage and in some cases, even the ability to earn mileage.
My philosophy is that friends don’t let friends fly basic economy.
For an average of $30 more per segment for a higher fare category, you get to protect yourself. So always look for the next higher fare before jumping on that first lower price.
