The Essentials

Neighborless Seats on Flights

Are you heading out on a long flight? Do you want more space but can’t afford the upgrade and are worried about who will be crammed in next to you?

Now a few airlines are offering an option.

Qantas, the Australian airline, now has a neighbor-free choice. You can get the seat next to you free for a fee, ranging from $30 to $65.

Air New Zealand will let you purchase an extra seat, starting at $60 on its long-haul flights to the U.S.

Want the whole row?

Emirates allows you to buy up to three adjoining seats, which you can buy at the check-in counter before departure. And the cost for that upgrade is between $65 and $165, depending on the length of the flight and the destination.
