The Essentials

Backup Travel Plans with Zero Change Fees

With flight delays and cancellations still high, many travelers are resorting to a different kind of backup plan. They are making two separate airline reservations to the same destination, one of which they will cancel if they make the other flight.

Here’s how it works. The first reservation is made for the first flight of the day, and if it involves a connecting flight, for at least a two-hour connect time between flights.

The second reservation is made on a different airline three hours after the scheduled departure of the first reservation.

Since airlines have eliminated change fees, you won’t lose your money if you cancel one of the flight itineraries. And if one flight cancels, then you get an immediate refund on that investment.
