The Essentials

Sites for Aviation Geeks

If you’re like me, and I’m an admitted aviation geek, I like to know everything I can about the plane I’m flying on. This includes the make, model, when it was built, the seating configuration and even the make of the engines.

And now, there are apps to get you that information — in real time.

Just about every search engine will tell you the type of plane you’re on, but let’s dig deeper.

Flightradar24.com will tell you the tail number, the age of the plane, its current location and its current altitude. And perhaps more interesting, it will tell you everywhere the plane has been in the last week up to 10 days.

Airfleets.net will tell you the plane’s engine type.

And both seatguru.com and expertflyer.com can give you an up to date seat map on your flight.
