The Essentials

Airline Dress Codes

When I was growing up, if my parents took me on an airplane trip, I would dress up for the flight. It was expected. There was a dress code.

But what about now? Do airline dress codes still exist?

The answer is yes, and you can find them in each airliine’s contract of carriage. It’s a legal agreement that you are expected to comply with every time you fly. And each airline has specific dress rules.

Alaska Airlines says if you’re over two years old and barefoot, you’re off the plane.

American Airlines will let you wear a t-shirt, as long as there are no offensive messages on it.

Delta has a clause allowing it to boot you for offensive body odor.

And while you may be headed for a beach vacation, Hawaiian Airlines bans speedos and bikini bottoms.
