The Essentials

Oldest Airlines

We all like to fly experienced airlines. But the age of some carriers might surprise you. The world’s oldest airline is over 100 years old, and it’s KLM.

The airline was started in October 1919.

The second oldest airline might surprise you. It’s Avianca, the national airline of Colombia.

And another oldie is Qantas, which dates back to 1920.

If you guessed that Pan Am was the oldest airline in the Americas, you’d be wrong. Pan Am ceased operating 30 years ago.

The title used to belong to Mexicana, which was founded in 1924, but that carrier ceased operating in 2010.

So which airline is the oldest in the United States? That would be Delta. It was founded in 1925.
