Tips for When You Rent a Car

Have you rented a car lately? Assuming you could afford the steep — and rising prices — of car rentals, a growing number of travelers are also getting dinged by unanticipated and very expensive rental car damage charges after they’ve returned their cars.

To protect yourself, make sure you always take time-coded cell phone photos of the car, both inside and out, at the time you rent the vehicle.

Try not to return the car after hours or when you must drop off the keys without human interaction.

If you don’t have a choice, take time-coded pictures then as well.

And make sure your car insurance covers rental cars. If it does, you can then confidently decline expensive coverage offered — or in many cases strongly pushed — by the rental car companies.
