A Way to Better Protect Bags When You Fly

The airlines seem to be doing a better job of not losing, misplacing or misdirecting passenger luggage.

That’s in no small part due to better technology and more sophisticated barcode baggage tags.

In fact, 97% of all lost bags are reunited with their owners within about two days.

But problems still persist. What can you do to better protect your bags when you fly?

First, use a separate, sturdy luggage tag, not the wafer thin ones the airlines provide.

Only put your name and your cell phone number. Never write your home address on the tag. That’s an advertisement to any thief that you’re not home.

Then, assume the tag won’t survive the trip.

Open your suitcase, get some strong masking tape and an indelible marker, write your name and phone number, and tape it to the inside of your bag.

That way, when the other tag gets ripped off, the airline will still have a way to find you. It’s simple but effective.
