The Essentials

Why Lines May Be Longer At Your Security Checkpoint

When it comes to airline travel in the next three months, it looks like it will be one hot, crowded summer with six times more air travelers than last year and full airplanes.

And you can expect long lines at security checkpoints in the United States.

The problem is understaffing. The TSA says it wants to hire 6,000 more agents to handle the increased number of passengers. But when will they arrive? It won’t be any time soon.

This means you should expect long and longer security lines as the TSA closes off the number of available lines, including at some airport PreChecks.

Is there at least a short term solution? For starters, choose alternate airports such as Oakland instead of San Francisco, Providence instead of Boston and Milwaukee instead of Chicago.

And in New York, you can do Islip instead of LaGuardia.
