Airlines Planning to Drop Routes

Early next month, airlines like American, Delta and United are planning to drop dozens of United States cities from their route networks.

Places range from Moline, Illinois to New Haven, Connecticut and from Roswell, New Mexico to Springfield, Illinois.

A few months ago, American Airlines dropped Oakland, California.

By the middle of October, as many as 90 United States cities might disappear from airline schedules.

What does this mean for you?

In some cases, cities might have severely reduced service, or no service at all, requiring you to drive up to three hours to find an airport where you can actually start your trip.

But even then, don’t expect many non-stop flights. As airlines eliminate cities and consolidate routes, a growing number of flights will require stops, and some itineraries that used to take three hours from door to door might cost you an entire day.

Be prepared for longer travel times and higher fares. And on some routes, it might just be more cost and time efficient to drive or take the train. Stay tuned.
