The Essentials

Should You Drink the Water?

We all remember the old caution: don’t drink the water, which is normally spoken when we’re about to leave the U.S.

But there’s some good news. There are now more places abroad where it’s safe to drink the tap water.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the destinations with the most U.S.-like water conditions are most of Western Europe, Canada, Greenland, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

In Africa, South America, Mexico, most of Asia and Eastern Europe, it’s still BYOBW — bring your own bottled water.

Or take the risk of sitting in your hotel room sick for the whole vacation.
