Hard to believe it was 30 years ago today. And I was there that day. I quickly flew in from London Gatwick Airport as Berlin erupted in celebration. I stopped enroute at a hardware store and bought a hammer and chisel which, remarkably, the airline let me bring on the plane. I reported on the story, but took a little extra time out to hammer away. I came back from Berlin with my chunks from the wall, (now framed in my office) but authorities confiscated my tools at the airport in Germany. I looked over at a huge trash bin and counted dozens of seized hammers, chisels, screwdrivers. But it was worth it.
