But the basic apps are being eclipsed by more sophisticated apps, and some are using artificial intelligence that can be even more helpful.

App in the Air is a service that will analyze your seat, time and airline preferences before suggesting choices.

You can also try the pro service from TripIt that can actually tell you the precise time to leave home, complete with maps and up to date alerts for the entire travel process — from getting you to the right gate to the correct baggage carousel.

And one of my favorites is Hipmunk — that sorts your flight options by agony — looking at length of the flight, the airline’s on-time reliability and the number of stops.
