Italy’s Problems With Overtourism

Locations in this article:  Florence, Italy Venice, Italy

There have been consequences of overtourism at some of the world’s most popular destinations.

Two tourists were just fined and ordered to leave Venice after brewing coffee in front of the famous Rialto Bridge in Venice. And the fine was a big one — over $1,000. It’s part of a new law recently passed that bans picnics in certain areas of the city, bathing in fountains, or going topless in public places.

In Florence, a similar law is in force, which now includes a stiff financial penalty for eating — anything — on the streets. And in some cases, this also includes sitting down in front of monuments.

For my money, I just wish they would ban tourists from standing in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with their hands also leaning in the air to feign supporting the building to shoot the most unoriginal photo ever.

Forewarned is forearmed. I hope you get the picture!
