Why Flying From Europe Isn’t Easier: April Strikes

Flying to Europe is getting a little more difficult. And flying FROM Europe isn’t any easier… why?

Just consider the following news items for April alone.

Ground staff at airports across Spain planned to strike all day on two days in April unless an agreement can be reached with employers. Up to 60,000 airport ground staff threatened to participate in the strikes over the peak Easter travel period.

An Italian ATC nationwide strike has been announced for May 3rd.

Due to a truck drivers’ strike, little fuel was available at Lisbon airport.

In Belgium, while an ATC strike was suspended at the end of March, there are still staff shortages and absences. The result was that Belgian airspace closed on April 15th and 16th. And on the ground, the situation wasn’t much better. Long distance train services were disrupted due to a workers’ strike.

It was just another Easter holiday in Europe…

Translation: Check with your air carrier early and often, before either flying to Europe, or even more importantly, before flying home…
