The Essentials

How Much Time You Really Need For Connecting Flights

Many of us take connecting flights, and so it’s important to build in extra time between those flights.

You need to pay attention to what the airlines might consider a legal connection and when in fact it may be too short to make that next flight.

This is especially true with making international connections. Some airlines will tell you an hour is enough time to make those connections, but it’s not even close.

Many airports are so congested you won’t get a gate. That’s extra taxi time to get to a remote parking stand, and it’s almost a 20-minute delay when getting from the plane to the terminal by bus.

And many countries then require you to clear immigration and security again before racing to your next flight. Translation: you’ve missed it, and so have your bags.

So when making reservations, give yourself at least a two-hour connect time, and remember, that assumes your initial flight is on-time.
